El Santuario De Monti Sion De Porreres 2
Mallorca

Between the mountains of Randa and Sant Salvador, within the municipality of Porreres, we can find the mountain of Monti-sion with a summit 250 metres high on which stands the sanctuary of the same name. The first chapel dedicated to the Virgin of Montision was built in the XIV century. Later, as from the XV century the present church was built, plus the cloister and Latin grammar school where children from Porreres and its surroundings were prepared for entry into Estudi General in Palma. In the XVIII and XIX centuries reforms were carried out and on January 14, 1954, nearly the whole village worked to open the present road in one day. Three kilometres of road that enabled the access by vehicles up to the sanctuary. On each side of the road there are seven crosses built in the XV century that represent the Seven Pains and Seven Joys of Mary, of which five are preserved, and the small monuments (XVIII century) of the Via Crucis that ends at the Sanctuary building.

The access to the buildings is via a staircase that ascends to the gateway of the entrance. From this point you access the cloister formed by arches and with a well in the centre for rainwater. The church has a facade with a rose stone over which is the bell tower and inside worth mentioning are the four side chapels and the neo-Gothic reredos in the presbytery, presided by the marble statue of la Mare de Deu de Monti-sion. The statue of the virgin has a shield of the Duzay family at her feet, since they paid for it at the end of the XV or beginning of the XVI century. As from the 60s, the sanctuary became a centre for stays and the sleeping quarters were restored, plus a restaurant of Mallorcan cooking was opened. Finally the visit to the sanctuary also entails enjoying some sensational panoramic views of Porreres and its surroundings.

The day with most visits by the public is on the Sunday del Ángel, which is the Sunday after Easter, when the Pancaritat celebration is held, with an excursion on foot from the village, the service and the popular dancing in the cloister.
