Porta S. Maria, Civita di Bagnoregio

Bagnoregio, the "city that dies" is a typical medieval city near Viterbo, north of Rome. Probably built around VII century on top of a sand hill, it is, due to erosion, a doomed city; several earthquakes in the past centuries have caused large portions of it to crumble downhill, including the only access road, by which a monastery stood until XIX century.

Civita di Bagnoregio, today a ghost city often crowded with tourists from all over the world, was also home to the philosopher Saint Bonaventure.
