Abbey of Santa Maria de Alcobaca, Virgin of the Cloister

In the south gallery of the D.Dinis cloister there is a niche with an image of the century. XVI, of the Nª Senhora, the Virgin of the Cloister. Attributed to Nicolau Chanterene. Covered by vaults that support the edges and the round arches of perfect round in corbels attached to the walls on both sides of the gallery, it retains the austerity imposed by the Cistercians. Due to its architectural structure, it is a curious example of the transition from the Roman-Gothic period, with capitals of very varied designs showing vegetal, anthropomorphic and zoomorphic motifs. Consisting of four galleries, the Cistercians gave their own designation to three of them according to the purpose for which they met, and in this gallery they met to read and to, sitting on benches against the wall, listen to the reading before the " Complete ".
