Sizihwan Bay is a well-known Kaohsiung tourist spot. To the right of the entrance of Sizihwan, there is a white set of stairs zigzagging up a small hill, bringing about a vivid contrast in relation to the green background. We ascended the stairs – one step up the hill corresponds to one step along the sea, and one feels like participating in a pilgrimage.
Caressing each and every red brick of the Former British Consulate at Dagou, one can feel the mark that time has left behind. With the history beneath your hand, and the beautiful scenery of Kaohsiung underneath your feet, at this juncture where the hill meets the sea, all the fantastic views are rounded up for you to enjoy.
The best time to visit the Consulate is between afternoon and dusk. Looking eastward, the majestic scenery of the entire Port of Kaohsiung laid itself out in a panorama: the Kaohsiung 85 Sky Tower and the Dream Mall Ferris Wheel constructed an animated and colorful modernistic painting. Looking southward, the Cijin Fishing Port sits at a distance, with fishing boats and ferries coming to and fro. The occasional sound of the steam whistle makes the entire place appears peaceful and leisurely.
Looking westward, there is the “Sizhi Sunset”, one of the eight wonders of Taiwan – at times serene and undisturbed, at times surging with rumbling waves.
The sunset cast its gentle warmth on the boundless Taiwan Strait, with romantic clouds painted on the sky like an illusion, and the lovers in the “radish pits” embracing each other. Ah! How intoxicating, this Kaohsiung waterscape!
The British Consulate is situated on top of a small hill in Sizihwan Bay. Established in 1865, it was the first consulate and Western-style house built by the British in Taiwan. The beautiful terrace gives it a very British appearance.
Outside, one can take in the waterscape of Sizihwan, one can also take in the entirety of the Port of Kaohsiung. Combined with leisure eatery, the public can take their meals here, enjoy a pot of tea, and let the ancient architectures develop into a novel romantic experience. This place has already become one of the hot spots in Kaohsiung.
