Schweiz

Stockalper Palace in Brig, Switzerland, was built between 1651 and 1671 by Kaspar Stockalper, merchant, banker, large-scale businessman, military officer and politician. A shrewd businessman who dominated the trade routes of Simplon Pass. An impressive palace, also known as a castle, due to its peculiar and highly representative design, with its three golden onion-shaped domes, it was the largest private building built in the 17th century in Switzerland, which reflects the immensity of Stockalper's wealth, hence its been called 'The King of Simplon'. The three impressive towers are in honor of the Three Kings, Kaspar, Melchior and Balthasar. The palace complex is complemented by the Stockalper Garden. Comprised of an ornamental garden, a wooded garden and a vineyard whose grapes are pressed annually. The palace courtyard and garden can be visited free of charge. In 1948, the Municipality of Brig acquired the property, which was completely renovated from 1956 onwards. Today the Stockalper Palace houses the municipal administration of Brig-Glis, the district court, the Institute for research into the Alpine region and other cultural institutions. This exhibition is also the starting point for guided tours of the historic halls of the Stockalper family, offered by the Brig Simplon tourist office. Today Stockalper Castle is the landmark of the city of Brig and the largest secular Baroque building in Switzerland.
