Salto is located in a mountainous environment, which restricts fertility and the extension of arable land, the production of cereals led to the organization of the term of each village in two very distinct spaces whose relations ensured the production of the agro-pastoral system:

- a cultivated domain, with cereal land, fallows, meadows and vegetable gardens, exploited individually.

- an uncultivated domain, the hill, which is generally more extensive, with grazing land, scrub and woodland, exploited in common by the neighbors.
