Monument (2013) to the Victims of Communist Terror, front view
Riga

Located in a grassy island area leading to the Torņakalns Railway Station is a monument made of five granite stones named “In the Snowstorm”  ("Putenī") symbolizing three generations of those who were so brutally arrested and deported during Stalin's Terror.

June deportation was the first in the series of mass Soviet deportations of tens of thousands of people from the Baltic states, Belarus, Ukraine and Moldova starting June 14, 1941 that followed the occupation and annexation of the Baltic states.
Men were generally imprisoned and most of them died in Siberian prison camps (Gulag); women and children were resettled in Kirov, Tomsk, Omsk and Novosibirsk Oblast as well as Krasnoyarsk and Altai Krai of Russia. About a half of them eventually survived.
After the war, further deportations were staged in a much larger scale.

More About Riga

Originated from a small fishermen village, for centuries Riga has been an important part of the trade chain between Russia and Western Europe. A lively crossroad of cultures and backgrounds for over 800 years, the historical centre of Riga has accumulated an impressive cultural baggage and today is justly included in the UNESCO’s World Heritage list.
