Batalha built to commemorate the victory of the Portuguese over the Castilians in the battle of Aljubarrota in 1385, the monastery of the Dominicans of Batalha was for two centuries the major project of the Portuguese monarchy which developed a national original Gothic style, strongly influenced by Manueline art, as shown in the Royal Cloister masterpiece.
