Huntingtower Castle, Perth
Scotland

Known as the Place of Ruthen prior to 1600, Huntingtower Castle is actually two tower houses standing close together. The unusual configuration is thought to be one for each son of the 1st Lord Ruthen. The castle was the home of the Ruthvens (later earls of Gowrie) until several run-ins with King James VI, known as the ‘Ruthven Raid’, when the young king was held against his will for 10 months, and the later ‘Gowrie Conspiracy’, after which the family was disinherited and the castle forfeited.

It was given to the Murrays of Tullibardine and renamed Huntingtower. The house has one of the oldest painted ceilings surviving in Scotland.
